Pismo August 19th-22nd 2007 stories
The majority of the UC4x4 crew arrived at Pismo beach early Sunday afternoon and had already set up camp, hit the dunes, and had dinner when Mike showed up. He told us he was trailering his Toyota pickup so he could “try and break it” in the dunes. What we didn’t know is that he was towing it with a 2WD Chevy C10 and the heaviest trailer on the face of the planet. Mike got the truck and trailer down the beach just fine and turned up into the soft sand to get to our camp and sure enough he got stuck almost instantly. Now the sun was setting, we were hanging out by the fire and Mike walks over to tell us he’s stuck. The logical starting point was to get the Toyota pickup off the trailer and up the beach. So Mike unloaded it and drove it to camp without issue. Our next thought was to just drag the truck and trailer combo up the beach. So Peter hooked up his Bronco and proceeded to bury himself. So he unhooked and got on some flat sand and re-connected to Mikes truck. Then we hooked up Brendan’s Chevy to Peters truck to make a train, so now with their forces combined they managed to achieve nothing... Hmmm… “Well, Mike, good luck with that,” we said as we walked away. Just kidding, you didn’t think we would give up did you? We realized we had to disconnect the truck and trailer. So Dan pulled up his Bronco, which was fan-less due to an incident in the dunes earlier and pulled Mikes truck up the beach to camp in a fast short burst so as to not over heat the engine. Meanwhile Peter was hooking up to the trailer to drag it up the beach. He got onto the hard sand and got up some momentum onto the beach and just when you thought the saga was going to end, the trailer falls off his truck and plows into the sand (see picture below). We were laughing so hard it took us 15 minutes to hook the truck back up. For take 2 we made sure the hitch mechanism latched and tried again. Peter got some momentum and started up the beach, he was doing fine until he realized he wasn’t sure where he was going to park the trailer, so he lost momentum and wasn’t going anywhere after that. A little help from Andrew and his Bronco hooked to Peters to create a 2-trucks-hooked-together-tow-truck (it’s a technical term) got the trailer to its resting spot, where it remained for the next 3 days. The whole ordeal took over 2 hours start to finish, phew!




Hollister Hills Cinco De Mayo 2007
While throwing mud in the only small mud puddle left in Hollister Hills someone noticed a Subaru 2.5RS driving by. The guy stopped to chat. Someone had the great idea to tell him to run the mud "pit" in his Subaru. He was very reluctant as, come to find out, his Subaru was lowered. However through our power of persuasion and the fact that IS AWD, we tried our best to convince him. He had what we thought was a tow point in the back, and it was shallow with 5 trucks around, so we could get him out. Armed with this knowledge, we finally got him to CRASH THE PIT. So he rolls up his windows (thank goodness) and rolls up to the pit, gets the front tires in and HITS THE GAS. Needless to say he was stuck, but throwing up AWESOME rooster tails. This is when someone pointed out that his rear tow point was actually a tie down, so too much force on it and SNAP we'd be up a creek (or a puddle as it were). So I hook up to him, and pull, SLOWLY, and get him out, and he goes on his merry way. He chatted with us back at camp, he was a real nice guy, and we gave him some pallets, and some charcoal for being such a damn great sport, and giving us a great story to tell.
